suggestion for discussion: Youth and ICT in Africa
The information and communication technology (ICT) revolution has radically changed the world we live in. Young people in particular have demonstrated their power in this, by their an aptitude in developing, adopting and disseminating such technologies. Young people’s role and leadership role in this sphere is evident throughout both the rich and developing world. In fact, it is common practice for adults to learn ICT skills from youth.
ICT adoption can be used both as a tool to promote youth as leaders in the ICT sector and to encourage broader youth leadership. Then, with an impact that is cross-cutting, ICT can, therefore, contribute to youth participation in a wide range of economic, social and political activities.
For example, ICT can be used for improving access to and quality of education for
African youth. With the necessary infrastructure, technologies like online learning can bring a high standard of education to remote, rural communities.
Despite its advantages, ICT adoption in much of Africa remains low. What can be done address that issue? I look forwards to hear your opinions on this issue.
